Elegant Outdoor Decor

Take a step back from over-the-top outdoor winter decor and consider more elegant pieces that can give your home a chic look this season.

Wreaths and Baskets
A wreath is a classic outdoor decoration that you can display year-round. When looking for a wreath, opt for elegance over extravagance. You can also use multiple wreaths in a unique design or add a scent as an enhancement. If wreaths aren't your thing, try hanging a basket of seasonal greens or pinecones instead.

Florals and Greenery
Having a floral or greenery display outside your home is an eye-catching way to greet guests. Placing planters with winter blooms like poinsettias, holly, witch hazel, or English primroses will add a colorful touch to your front porch and entryway.

Landscaping and Lighting
Lush landscaping can complement your outdoor decor. Staying on top of yard work throughout the season will keep your landscape neat and tidy, and adding some flair will take it up a notch. Consider lanterns for a warm glow around your home's exterior or display some lighted mini evergreens for a subtle nod to the season.

Unique Pet Products

If you're looking for a fun holiday gift for your pet, try one of these clever products they're sure to love.

Shield your dog from the rain with an umbrella leash. Perfect for the pet that doesn't like to get wet!

Mount a self-grooming brush on the wall to satisfy your cat's demands for scratches and back rubs.

A paw washer will keep your dog from tracking mud into the house. Just add water, insert a paw and rotate the washer. Paws are delicately cleaned by silicone bristles.

Add peanut butter to a silicone licking mat and put it on your shower wall. The tasty distraction will allow you to bathe your dog with little resistance.

A glow-in-the-dark ball is great for pets that like to play day and night, keeping them amused after the sun goes down.

If your dog likes to hang its head out the car window, try dog goggles to protect its eyes.

Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

This year commemorates the 80th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor in the Hawaiian Islands. President Franklin Roosevelt declared December 7, 1941, as "a date that will live in infamy," and Congress officially designated National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day in 1994.

On that day in 1941, hundreds of Japanese warplanes launched an attack on the U.S. naval base in Honolulu. The attack lasted for hours, with over 20 ships damaged or sunk, and 350 aircraft damaged or destroyed. Tragically, the attack left 1,143 wounded and 2,403 killed. The United States declared war on Japan and officially entered World War II the following day.

To honor the fallen from that day, consider participating in a local commemoration event or watch the 80th anniversary observance online. You can also send care packages to soldiers overseas or donate to a charity that supports the military and their families, such as the Wounded Warrior Project and Folds of Honor.

Give Back With a Party

During the holiday season, we often reflect on the good in our lives and all the people who make it special. In this time of gathering and celebrating, many also feel the desire to help people or organizations in need. While charity is important year-round, the holiday season is the perfect time to help out in a fun, festive way. Consider these ideas to throw a purposeful holiday party with a philanthropic twist.

Paw-ty
Celebrate your furry friends by hosting a puppy playdate at a local dog park or in your own backyard. Guests can enjoy canine-themed treats while their dogs run around and have fun. Ask your guests to bring donations to a local animal shelter, such as food, toys or cleaning supplies. Check out the shelter's website beforehand to see if they have a wish list with the most-needed items.

Get Crafty
Use your creativity and organize a crafting party. If you and your guests enjoy knitting, consider making blankets or booties for hospitalized infants. If you have a passion for education, host a scrapbooking event and ask guests to bring extra art supplies to donate to teachers who often have to pay out of pocket for their classroom supplies.

Fashion Exchange
Keep clothing out of landfills by inviting your friends over for a clothing swap. Fashion is one of the world's most wasteful industries, but you can help reduce waste and have fun at the same time. Ask guests to bring clothing they no longer wear, and take turns going through each other's items to find some "new-to-you" pieces. If there's anything left, drop it off at a local women's shelter or crisis center.
